Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has backed his selection of Nigeria-based goalkeeper Adebiyi Serge Obassa for their upcoming matches in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Afrosport reports.
Obassa, who plies his trade with Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Remo Stars, was named in the 25-man squad released by Rohr last week.
The 71-year-old German coach has alluded to Obassa’s knowledge of ‘Nigerian football’ as one of the major reasons for his selection.
“[Serge] Obassa knows Nigerian football very well since he plays for Remo Stars, which is one of the best clubs in Nigeria at the moment,” Rohr stated while talking to Mega Sports.
‘So his experience and know-how can also be useful to us, whether in training or possibly in matches”
The Cheetahs will play the Super Eagles on Thursday at the Stade Felix Houphouet Boigny, before heading to Tripoli to tackle the Mediterranean Knights of Libya on Monday, November 18.
