AFCON 2023: Williams stars in penalty shootout again as South Africa claim bronze medal

Ronwen Williams starred in the penalty shootout again as South Africa defeated DR Congo 6-5 after a goalless 90 minutes at Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Saturday night to lift the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal.

Bafana Bafana lost on penalties to Nigeria in the semi-finals while the Leopards were defeated by AFCON 2023 hosts Ivory Coast.

Not much was created in the 90 minutes in Abidjan with Silas Mvumpa’s effort in the 66th minute, Chancel Mbemba’s own 10 minutes later and Fitson Mayele’s chance in the 90th minute, the closet anyone got in that period.

Off to penalties and Teboho Mokoena missed South Africa’s first kick. Mbemba had the opportunity to win it for DR Congo with the fifth and final kick but he missed to force sudden death.

Williams, who saved four penalties against Cape Verde in the quarter-finals, stepped up to catch Meschak Elia’s penalty to hand South Africa their second AFCON bronze medal after winning their first in 2000 in Accra.
