AFCON 2023: South Africa coach Broos praises home-based players for beating Morocco

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has reserved praise for his players for their convincing display in the 2-0 defeat of Morocco at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Bafana Bafana knocked out the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists in the round of 16 on Tuesday to advance into the quarter-final.

Orlando Pirates striker Evidence Makgopa and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena found the back of the net in the second half to secure win for South Africa.

Broos hailed the victory as a result of hardwork of his squad that is dominated by players in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League.

After Tuesday’s night game, the Belgian coach told the media: “I don’t think I need to express my joy at having defeated Morocco. It’s something special, we did the job. We are extremely happy to be in the quarter-finals.

“We knew we wouldn’t have many chances, we exploited them. There’s no secret, it’s just hard work. Even with local players, you achieve good results.

“We faced a team much stronger than us, but we played collectively, grouped together.”

South Africa will face Cape Verse in the quarter-final on Saturday as they target a second AFCON trophy in Ivory Coast, their first since 1996.
