AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: Predicting Super Eagles’ starting XI against Sierra Leone

AFCON Qualifiers: Ndidi watches as Super Eagles begin training

Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro is set to try new options in Sunday’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Sierra Leone.

A draw in Monrovia is enough for the Super Eagles to confirm their spot in next year’s tournament in the Ivory Coast.

Among the changes to expect in Peseiro’s selection is the goalkeepers’ department with the absence of first-choice goalkeepers Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho, either Adebayo Adeleye, Ojo Olorunleke or Victor Sochima will his debut.

Afrosport predicts Nigeria’s starting line-up for the game.

Goalkeeper – Victor Sochima: The Rivers United shot-stopper is not new to the Super Eagles fold after getting his maiden invitation to the national team in March. The 24-year-old has trained with the team previously and could make his debut on Sunday.

Defender – Bright Osayi-Samuel: The Fenerbahce star returns to the national team with his fine form after winning the Turkish Cup a week ago. Osayi-Samuel played every minute of the Super Eagles’ games against Guinea-Bissau in March.

Defender  Zaidu Sanusi: Peseiro would not have a second thought about giving the Porto left-back his starting shirt. He is one of the regular players.

Defender – William Troost-Ekong: The Italy-based centre-back is returning to retain his spot in the defence after missing the last international break.

Defender – Kenneth Omeruo: The Leganes captain might be an option to partner Troost-Ekong at the centre of the defence.

Midfielder – Frank Onyeka: The Brentford star is tipped to anchor the middle of the park and also assist in defensive duties.

Midfielder – Alex Iwobi: Iwobi’s creativity and energetic work rate are ended to unlock Sierra Leone’s defence as the Super Eagles chase a commanding result.

Midfielder – Samuel Chukwueze: The Villarreal winger is needed on the flanks to provide support for the strikers.

Midfielder – Ademola Lookman: Thanks to his decisiveness and finishing skills, the Atalanta star might beat Moses Simon to the starting XI.

Forwards – Victor Osimhen: Barring any late injury, Osimhen should lead the Super Eagles attack and he will be aiming to end his goal drought since June 2022.

Forwards – Kelechi Iheanacho: Iheanacho might be called on to play as a supporting striker to Osimhen.
