AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: Late Barry strike hands The Gambia victory over South Sudan

A late Hamza Barry strike handed The Gambia a 3-2 victory over South Sudan in Group G of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Thursday.

The Scorpions took the lead at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismaila when South Sudan full-back Rehan Angier put the ball into his own net in the fourth minute before Valentino Yuel equalised for the Bright Stars the 21st minute.

It remained that way until the 62nd when Abile Jallow restored The Gambia’s lead only for late drama to ensue when Peter Chol made it 2-2 for South Sudan in second minute of injury time.

The Gambians would however have the last say thanks to Barry’s winner in the 96th minute.

The victory saw The Gambia go level on nine points with group leaders Mali who face Congo on Sunday.
