AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: Egypt defeat Guinea, qualify for record 26th appearance

Egypt came from behind to defeat Guinea 2-1 in their Group D encounter of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers at the Stade de Marrakech on Wednesday.

Two goals from substitute Trezeguet and pacey forward Mostafa Mohamed cancelled out Serhou Guirassy’s opener for the National Elephants as the Pharaohs won their fourth game of the group and became the 8th team to qualify for the 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.

Rennes forward Guirassy broke the deadlock in the 26th minute after beautiful buildup play by the Guineans. The 27-year-old tapped into an empty net after left-back Issiaga Sylla put the ball on a plate for him.

Despite Guinea looking like the stronger team, Trezeguet drew Egypt level sixteen minutes later with a well-placed right-footed strike past the Guinean goalkeeper. The Trabzonspor winger, who was played through on goal by Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, got the Pharaohs’ first goal of the game.

Trezeguet then turned provider for Egypt’s second as his low cross into the box found Mohamed, who made a half turn before sending a right-footed bullet past Ibrahim Kone to put the North Africans ahead.

The Pharaohs have now qualified for the AFCON 26 times, the most in the tournament’s history and will be in search of a record-extending eighth title when the competition begins in Ivory Coast in January 2024.
