Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has set a target of first position in Group A ahead of his team’s final group against Guinea-Bissau at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria are currently locked with four points with leaders Equatorial Guinea but they can secure top spot if they beat West African rivals, Guinea-Bissau on Monday and the result between Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast goes their way.
Jose Peseiro’s men started their campaign in Ivory Coast with a 1-1 draw against the National Thunder followed by a 1-0 win against the Elephants of Ivory Coast.
The Portuguese tactician is positive about the confidence level in the Super Eagles camp and he is hoping they deliver result at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium.
“We want to reach the first position, we fight for the first position in the group with Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea or the opposite, Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast,” Peseiro told the media in a press conference on Sunday.
“(In order to) fight for the first place, we must do our job, be committed to our work, our goal and obligations.
“Of course when a team win that improves confidence. You believe more, this happens everywhere. But this confidence can help us only if we put the same or more focus, the same or more commitment and if you do not relax.
“Sometimes when you have too much confidence you relax.”
Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau have faced each other thrice on the international scene with the former emerging as the dominant side with two wins.
The Super Eagles’ only loss to Guinea-Bissau was in March 2023 during the AFCON qualifiers in Abuja.
