Angola head coach Pedro Gomcalves has congratulated Nigeria for their 1-0 win in the quarter-final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Goncalves could not lead the Sable Black Antelopes into the semi-final for the first time in the country’s history as Ademola Lookman power to the Super Eagles to victory.
The 47-year-old praised his Portuguese counterpart Jose Peseiro for the work he has put in to build a formidable Super Eagles team as he rues Angola’s misses chances in the encounter.
“I would like to congratulate the Nigeria team, they are very strong, the coach has put in place a solid system. They deserved their victory,” Goncalves said after Friday’s game.
“I think we could have won. We fought for the whole 90 minutes. We felt sorry for ourselves after conceding the goal. We had opportunities to score but we didn’t put them in.
“I have the feeling of having succeeded in my mission with the Angolan national team. I am aware of the work I have accomplished with my team, no one expected Angola in the quarter-finals.”
The Portuguese coach has been at the helm of Angola football since 2019 and his team stamped their presence in Ivory Coast as one of the highest scoring teams with nine goals scored.
