AC Milan will not proceed with a deal to sign Nigerian forward Victor Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen due to a failed medical, Afrosport reports.
The 24-year-old underwent medical tests in Milan on Friday ahead of a season-long loan move worth a €5 million fee, with a €25 million option to buy.
This follows concerns over the condition of his right knee, with Milan now moving forward to other targets ahead of the close of the transfer window on Monday, 1 September.
Boniface has a long history of knee injuries, having torn his anterior cruciate ligament twice while playing for Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt. He has also suffered multiple muscle injuries to his hamstring and groin.
His failed move to Milan marks the second such occurrence in his career as a transfer to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr failed to materialise January 2025 despite agreement from both clubs.
The Nigeria international is expected to return to Germany, and Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said they are open to welcoming him back.
He said” If [Victor Boniface] comes back [to Leverkusen], the Milan issue will be over. That’s no big secret.”
On whether the Rossoneri could renegotiate the terms of the deal, he added: “I don’t think that will happen.
[Boniface’s fitness] has already improved compared to the beginning. He needs to continue to build himself up. We believe her can take steps forward but he has to take them.”Milan were stunned 2-1 in their Serie A opener by newly-promoted Cremonese, while Leverkusen also fell 2-1 to Hoffenheim in their Bundesliga opener.
