Nigeria’s Flying Eagles booked their place in the round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup after earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Colombia in their final Group F match on Sunday night, Afrosport reports.
Aliyu Zubairu’s side went into the game knowing a win or draw would be enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, and they showed plenty of fight in Talca.
After a goalless first half, Colombia took the lead in the 51st minute when Kener Gonzalez fired past Ebenezer Harcourt from outside the box.
Nigeria pushed for an equaliser and were finally rewarded late on when VAR confirmed a handball in the Colombian box. Captain Daniel Bameyi kept his cool from the penalty spot in the 86th minute to level the scores – his second goal of the tournament.
