Donnarumma relishing life under Pep Guardiola at Man City

Gianluigi Donnarumma has officially started his Manchester City career, expressing both pride and excitement as he joins what he calls “one of the best clubs in the world”, Afrosport reports.

The 26-year-old Italian completed a move from Paris Saint-Germain on transfer deadline day, signing a five-year contract for a reported fee of £30.4 million.

The transfer marks the start of a new chapter in Donnarumma’s career, one that brings him to the English Premier League, a destination he has long dreamed of.

“Yes, it’s the start of a new chapter for me,” Donnarumma said during his unveiling. “Playing at Manchester City and in the Premier League is really exciting. I’m ready for this challenge, and I’ve always dreamed of one day playing in the Premier League, because I think it’s the best league in the world.

“So for a footballer aspiring to play in the Premier League, I think that’s the best for yourself. So I’m very, very happy.”

Having begun his professional journey with AC Milan as a 16-year-old in 2015, Donnarumma rose to prominence as one of Europe’s most talented goalkeepers. He made the switch to PSG in 2021, where he amassed 10 titles, including a historic treble last season.

Despite his success in France, the allure of the Premier League, and the opportunity to work under Pep Guardiola proved irresistible.

“I think his past speaks for itself,” Donnarumma said when asked about Guardiola. “For me, to be wanted so much by coach Guardiola is a source of great pride. It is an emotion that cannot be explained.

“Being coached by him, I think it’s the best thing for a footballer. I can’t wait to get on the pitch alongside him, to listen to him. And I’m sure that he will help me so much and that altogether, we will be able to have a great season, both now and in the coming years.”

Donnarumma, who will wear the number 25 shirt at the Etihad Stadium, also emphasised how deeply he felt wanted by the club, something he said made the decision much easier.

He explained: “So excited. I’m very proud to be here, and to be at one of the best clubs in the world. The fact that I was so wanted here made everything easier.

“I can’t wait to get started at this historic club, a club that wants to win, with a great history behind it. I’m very proud, happy. There is also a lot of responsibility, but I am really proud to be here, to help this club and continue to win together.”

City bought James Trafford from Burnley this summer and sold Ederson to Fenerbahce. They still have Stefan Ortega and Marcus Bettinelli in their ranks and it is left to see who will start against Manchester United on Sunday.
