2025 Afrobasket: Angola crush Mali to seal record 12th title in Luanda

Angola dominated Mali in the final of the 2025 FIBA Afrobasket to claim a record-extending 12th crown on Sunday with a commanding 70-43 victory, Afrosport reports.

The hosts had edged Cameroon by a single point in Saturday’s semi-final, while Mali booked their place in the Championship game after overcoming five-time winners Senegal.

However, it was one-way traffic in the final at the 12,700-capacity Kilamba Arena in Luanda, as Angola led from start to finish. They opened up a 14-10 advantage in the first quarter, which grew to 12 points at half-time following an 18-10 second quarter.

The gap widened further after the break, with Angola outscoring Mali 38-23 in the second half to secure a 27-point victory and reclaim the Afrobasket crown – their first title since 2013.

Angola finished the tournament with an unbeaten 6-0 record and were led by 16 points from Childe Dundao. Selton Miguel also hit double figures with 12 points.

Mali, meanwhile, endured a torrid night, recording the fewest points tally in an Afrobasket game in over three decades. Siriman Kanoute registered 14 points and eight rebounds, while Aliou Diarra contributed 11 points, five rebounds and four blocks for the West Africans.

Elsewhere, Senegal secured bronze with a comprehensive 98-72 win over Cameroon in the third-place game. The Teranga Lions celebrated their seventh bronze medal – and their third in succession.

Jean-Jacques Boissy stole the show, leading all scorers with 40 points to set a new Afrobasket single-game record. His tally, which also included five rebounds and seven assists, eclipsed the previous mark of 38 points set by Cape Verde’s Jeff Xavier in 2009.

Brancou Badio added 18 points for Senegal, while Ibou Badji posted 12 points and seven rebounds. For Cameroon, Jordan Bayehe and Jeremiah Hill combined for 33 points in a losing effort.

Meanwhile, Angola’s success was further underlined with individual honours, as Dundao was crowned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP). He was also named in the All-Tournament Team alongside compatriot Bruno Fernando, Senegal’s Badio, and Mali pair Diarra and Mahamane Coulibaly.
