Two-time African Nations Championship winners Morocco booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2024 edition after defeating DR Congo in their final Group A game on Sunday, Afrosport reports.
Both teams were tied on six points heading into this game, with the Atlas Lions slightly ahead on goal difference.
The head-to-head record was however going to be the deciding factor and it was the Moroccans who went ahead through Oussama Lamlioui after eight minutes.
The Congolese equalised thanks to Japhte Kitambala in the 43rd minute but the Moroccans were in front in the closing 20 minutes with Mohamed Hrimat scoring from the penalty spot and Lamlioui completing his brace in the 90th minute.
Lamlioui thought he made it a hat-trick in the 85th minute but it was ruled out for offside.
The North African giants clinched second place, finishing one point behind co-hosts Kenya, who edged past Zambia 1-0 in Nairobi via a 70th minute strike from Ryan Ogam.
