Real Betis midfielder Isco suffered a fractured tibia in a pre-season friendly against his former club Malaga on Saturday, Afrosport reports.
The 33-year-old Spaniard suffered the same injury in May last year and was out of action for seven months.
Upon his return in December, Isco’s presence on the pitch helped Betis finish sixth in La Liga and also reach the final of the UEFA Conference League, their first-ever appearance in an European final.
His season form, where he contributed 12 goals and 11 assists in 33 competitive games, also got him a call-up to the Spain national team for the first time in six years.
He came on as a substitute and scored in the penalty shootout loss to Portugal in the UEFA Nations League final.
“Real Betis Balompie player Isco Alarcón suffered an injury in the final preseason friendly against Málaga CF. Following medical tests, he has a new, non-displaced fracture in the middle third of his left fibula,” read a club statement.
“This is a new traumatic injury unrelated to the previous injury, which has been resolved.
“The player will undergo conservative treatment in the coming weeks, and his return will depend on the progress of the injury.”
