FIFACWC: Marquinhos satisfied with PSG’s season despite defeat to Chelsea

FIFACWC: Chelsea’s Palmer delighted to prove doubters wrong in triumph over PSG

Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos does not believe Sunday’s defeat to Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup final has undermined their season, Afrosport reports.

The French capital outfit looked on track to make it a quintuple of titles, having won the Trophee des Champions, Ligue 1, Coupe de France and UEFA Champions League.

They were however undone by three first goals from Cole Palmer (brace) and Joao Pedro, denying them a chance to win the Club World Cup for the very first time.

“It’s always tough to lose a final. It’s the one match you can’t afford to lose. But if we look back, I think we had an incredible tournament,” Marquinhos said after the game.

“We played against some very strong sides and we beat them, we went all the way to the final. It was excellent up to this point, but we didn’t take our chances.

“We were well below our usual level today, below what we are capable of. We have to take a good look at this performance, see what we can improve on ahead of next season.

“But we also really enjoyed an incredible season, with a first Champions League triumph and more trophies in France, but we really wanted to win this competition.

“The first of its kind, played once every four years. We didn’t do it, but it takes nothing away from the rest of our campaign.”

Reacting to the defeat, PSG manager Luis Enrique said: “Football – that’s the way it is. Can’t explain everything.

“I believe they actually started the game really, really well with a lot of pressure, and we gave them a hard time. And then after that, I believe they had opportunities to score, but it didn’t happen.”

PSG will have another opportunity to win silverware when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Super Cup at Stadio Friuli in Udine on August 13.
