Wydad Casablanca ended their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign without a point after losing 2-1 to Al Ain in their final Group G game in Washington DC on Thursday, Afrosport reports.
The Moroccans were the first African team to be eliminated after losing to Manchester City (2-0 with 10 men) and Juventus (4-1).
The game against their opponents from the United Arab Emirates, who were equally out of the competition, was therefore a battle for third place.
Wydad were in front in Audi Field after four minutes when South African midfielder Cassius Mailula fired into the top corner of net. Al Ain however leveled matters in added time of the first half when Togolese forward Kodjo Laba scored from the penalty spot.
The comeback was complete for the Emirati side when Paraguayan midfielder Kaku sent in a curling effort into the top corner again for their first and only win that cemented third place while Wydad finished bottom.
Meanwhile, in the battle for top spot, Manchester City were the victors after their emphatic 5-2 win over Juventus in Orlando to finish as the only team with maximum points in the group stage.
