Bayern defender Davies ruled out of season with ACL injury

Alphonso Davies

Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee, Afrosport reports.

Davies, who will require surgery on the injured knee, will be out for “several months,” delivering a serious blow to Bayern’s Bundesliga and Champions League aspirations.

The 24-year-old fullback suffered the injury while on international duty with Canada and was forced off in the 12th minute in their 2-1 win over the United States in the CONCACAF Nations League third-place play-off on Sunday.

Davies, who recently signed a new five-year deal to remain at Bayern, has scored three goals and provided three assists in 31 matches across all competition for the club this season.

Meanwhile, the Bavarians will also be without Dayot Upamecano, with the French defender sidelined for “several weeks” after picking up a knee injury on international duty with France.

“Unfortunately, there’s always the risk of players returning from international breaks with injuries – this time we’ve been hit particularly hard,” said Bayern sporting director Max Eberl.

“The absence of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano weighs heavily on FC Bayern. Phonzy will get all the support he needs on his road to recovery. We’ll also be keeping a close eye on Upa in the coming weeks and expect him to be available again soon.

“We have a strong squad and will compensate for these absences. We’ll now grow even closer together. The quality is there to continue pursuing our big goals.”

Bayern are chasing a record-extending 34th Bundesliga title, and Vincent Kompany’s side are six points clear of champions Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga standings after 26 matches, with eight games remaining.

They will face Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals, with the first leg in Munich on 8 April.
