Premier League: FA fines Newcastle, Aston Villa after Boxing Day melee

The Football Association on Friday sanctioned Aston Villa and Newcastle United following for their part in a scuffle that ensued during their Premier League clash on Boxing Day, Afrosport reports.

Villa were slammed with a £30,000 fine, Newcastle got £20,000 and both clubs were also warned after failing to control their players and staff members during an altercation at St. James Park.

Newcastle won the match 3-0, scoring two goals after Villa were reduced to 10 men as Jhon Duran was sent off in the 32nd minute for stamping on Swiss defender Fabian Schar.

Newcastle assistant manager Jason Tindall and Villa analyst Victor Manas were also sent off as high tensions led to an altercation after the first half ended.

“It was alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players and/or technical area occupants did not behave in an improper and/or provocative way around the tunnel area at half time,” the FA said in a statement.

The FA added that Villa, Newcastle, and Manas all admitted to their respective charges, while Tindall denied the allegations against him.

Manas, meanwhile, was handed a two-match ground ban and £4,000 fine, while Tindall will face no further punishments after the FA’s Regulatory Commission found the charge against him “to be not proven”.
