Super Eagles soar to 28th in latest FIFA ranking after AFCON 2023 success

Fresh off their 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in Abidjan last Thursday, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on Rwanda in Uyo on Monday, November 18, in their final game in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The matchday six encounter is a dead rubber game for the three-time African champions, who have already secured a spot in next year’s AFCON Finals in Morocco.

Nigeria remains unbeaten in Group D, and currently sits atop the standings with 11 points. However, the Amavubi of Rwanda, third in the group with five points must defeat the Super Eagles to have any shot at qualifying for the tournament.

Where and when is the match?

The Group D matchday six encounter between Nigeria and Rwanda in the AFCON 2025 Qualifiers, is scheduled to hold on Monday, November 18 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

 

Historical Perspective – What do the stats say?

The Super Eagles and The Amavubi of Rwanda have only faced each other on a handful of occasions with the former currently unbeaten in this fixture.

Of their six previous meetings, Nigeria, who have yet to suffer defeat, have recorded two wins and four draws, while Rwanda have been on the end of two defeats.

Along with their stalemate in Abidjan against the Cheetahs of Benin, the Super Eagles are on a run of five wins, three draws, and three losses in their last 11 matches in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Rwanda’s Amavubi, ranked 36th in Africa, have recorded four wins, three losses and three draws in their last 10 matches. In their recent matches against West African oppositions—Nigeria and Benin Republic—they have recorded one win, one draw and one defeat.

Players to Watch Out For

Nigeria

Victor Osimhen: Victor Osimhen was not called up to the Super Eagles team in the October international due to injury, but he scored the all-important equaliser in their 1-1 draw in Abidjan, which secured the AFCON ticket for Nigeria.

Osimhen, who became Nigeria’s joint-second all-time leading scorer with 23 goals in 38 matches, has a brilliant record in the AFCON qualifiers with 17 goals and 8 assists in 14 matches, and he will be looking to continue his fine form against Rwanda in Uyo.

Victor Boniface: With Ademola Lookman ruled out of the match, it is time for Victor Boniface to step up to the plate and possibly open his international account as he has drawn blank in all his 10 games so far.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward has scored eight goals in 15 appearances in all competitions for the German club this season.

Rwanda PLAYERS HURDLE Rwanda

Innocent Nshuti: The 26-year-old forward, who plays for One Knoxville SC in the United States is one of the leading players in the Rwandan national team.

Since he made his debut in 2021, Nshuti has scored three goals in 15 matches for Amavubi. He so far has two goals in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, having scored against Libya and Benin, respectively.

Fiacre Ntwari: Ntwari, 25, made the difference for the Amavubi in the first leg against Nigeria in Kigali, where he made nine saves to hold the Super Eagles scoreless.

The Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper has made 17 saves in five matches in the AFCON qualifiers so far.
