Nations League: Germany seal top spot in group, Netherlands secure quarterfinal berth

The UEFA Nations League action continued on Saturday as Germany thrashed Bosnia-Herzegovina 7-0 to claim a record tournament win with a game to spare while the Netherlands secures a quarterfinal spot, Afrosport reports.

Jamal Musiala gave Germany the lead in the second minute after heading Joshua Kimmich’s cross past Nikola Vasilj before Tim Kleindienst
right-footed effort doubled the host lead in the 23rd minute, being his first national goal.

Kai Havertz made it 3-0 eight minutes before the break, following a slick one-two with Florian Wirtz, thereafter Wirtz added a fourth on seven second-half minutes, with a stunning 25-yard free-kick then doubling up seven minutes later from close range past Bosnia goalkeeper.

Substitute Leroy Sane scored Germany’s sixth in the 66th minute before Kleindienst completed his brace of the evening as he guided home a pinpoint cross from Antonio Rudiger eleven minutes from time to wrap up an emphatic 7-0 win.

Elsewhere in Group A3, the Netherlands secured their spot in the  Nations League encounter quarter-finals by defeating Hungary 4-0.

The match was halted in the seventh minute by Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano after Hungarian coach Adam Szalai collapsed.

Shortly after the game resumed, Ronald Koeman’s side were awarded a penalty, with Tamas Nikitscher adjudged to have handled inside the box following intervention from VAR, former Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst scored from the spot, to send the hosts into the lead.

Cody Gakpo, converted his team’s second penalty of the match after Donyell Malen had been fouled by Zsolt Nagy, in the 12th minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half

Denzel Dumfries then made it 3-0 in the 64th minute with a volley from inside the penalty box after being set up by Malen before substitute Teun Koopmeiners scored with a quality header in the 85th minute to make it 4-0.

In Group B1, Georgia played out a 1-1 draw at home to Ukraine. Solomon Kvirkvelia’s own goal gave the visitors the lead in the seventh minute.

However, Georges Mikautadze leveled for the host with 14 minutes remaining and stayed two points ahead of the fourth-placed visitors.

Czech Republic drew 0-0 in Albania and remain top of the group on eight points, one ahead of Georgia in second and their third-placed opponents.

Elsewhere, Turkey striker Kerem Akturkoglu missed an 89th-minute penalty as Wales secured a hard-earned 0-0 draw away against Turkey in League B Group 4, while Orri Oskarsson’s and Isak Bergmann Johannesson helped Iceland to a 2-0 win against Montenegro in the group’s other game.

Viktor Gyokeres, registered a goal and an assist as Sweden beat Slovakia 2-1 in League C Group 1.

Gyokeres gave the hosts the lead after just two minutes, but David Hancko leveled in the 19th minute to make it 1-1 at half-time. After the interval, Alexander Isak won it for the hosts three minutes after the break with an assist from Gyokeres.


In another group game, Albania and the Czech Republic played out a 0-0 draw in League B Group 1.

Virgiliu Postolachi scored the winning goal of the game as Moldova defeated Andorra in League D Group 4.
