Liverpool and Van Dijk in talks over new contract

Liverpool and Van Dijk in talks over new contract

Virgil Van Dijk stated that he has open fresh contract talks with Liverpool, Afrosport reports.

The Dutch man has been with the club since 2018 and his contract is expiring at the end of the season.

There has however been uncertainty over his future at Anfield and says his focus at the moment is on the football season with the club.

“Discussions are ongoing, we will see what happens in the future, Van Dijk said per BBC Sport.

“My full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else.

“What the future will bring I have no idea at the moment. I can only tell you that discussions have started and we will see.”

The 33-year-old also stated that he is in good  condition healthwise and is enjoying his time with the Reds.

“I feel good, physically, mentally and I am having fun,” he added.

“When it’s time to make a decision, you guys [the media] will know it as well.

He also gave credits to his team following their strong start to the Premier League this season.

“I wouldn’t say it’s [just] the last line and the goalkeepers making a difference, it’s the guys in front of us, it’s a team effort,” he explained.

“Me and Ibou [Konate] as the centre-backs, or the goalkeepers, will get the credit for the clean sheets but it’s about everyone in the team and credit to everyone who is doing that.”

Liverpool have been flying this season with seven wins from their first eight league games which sees them on top of the Premier League table.

Virgil Van Djik has been quiet instrumental this season for Liverpool, conceding just three goals this season which is the best defensive record in the league so far.

Like Van Dijk, Trent Alexander Arnold and
Egypt Forward Mohamed Salah will also be out of contract next summer and nothing has been released about them yet.
