Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz has picked up an ankle injury while on international duty with German, Afrosport reports.
The 21-year-old midfielder has suffered a capsular joint injury to his right ankle, the Bundesliga club revealed on Tuesday.
Wirtz sustained the injury in the first half of Germany’s 1-0 home win over the Netherlands in their UEFA Nations League match on Monday at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena.
The youngster was, however, substituted before the second half restart by club teammate Robert Andrich.
A statement from Leverkusen on Tuesday, revealed that Wirtz underwent an MRI scan to determine the extent of the injury and is receiving treatment at the club.
It read: “An MRI scan has confirmed that Germany international Florian Wirtz sustained an injury to the joint capsule in his right ankle, without interference from an opponent, towards the end of the first half of Monday evening’s Nations League match against Netherlands (1-0).
“The 21-year-old is currently being treated in Leverkusen. It’s not yet clear when Wirtz will rejoin team training. The midfielder was replaced by Bayer 04 team-mate Robert Andrich at half-time in the Nations League match.”

Wirtz’s injury makes him a doubt for their Bundesliga match against Eintracht Frankfurt at BayArena on Saturday as well as their visit to France to take on Ligue 1 side Brest in the Champions League on Wednesday, October 23.
The German champions are currently fifth in the Bundesliga standings with 11 points after six games, three points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
Meanwhile, Germany’s win over the Dutch puts them atop Group A3 in the Nations League and secured a quarterfinals berth for the four-time World champions.
