Abeokuta 10km Race: Organisers target World Athletics’ Bronze label for fifth edition

Organisers of the Abeokuta 10-kilometre race, Nilayo Sports Management Limited (NSML) says they are targeting a bronze label for the fifth edition of the event.

Mr. Bukola Olopade, NSML Managing Director, made this known at the end of the 2024 edition of the race in Abeokuta, where he revealed that their target is to get better in all spheres having expressed confidence in attaining the Bronze label status.

He said: “We had a plan right from the moment we started; it is for us to get better every time and here we are at a point where everyone wants to identify with us”.

“Going forward, we intend to apply for a Bronze label, although it’s subject to ratification from World Athletics, we are convinced that what we have done so far since the race debuted in 2019 is enough to earn us the label,” Olopade concluded.

Saturday’s Abeokuta 10km race saw Nigeria’s Francis James end East Africa’s dominance in the event, by winning the 2024 edition in 30 minutes and 11 seconds, to take home the $1,000 prize money.

Meanwhile in the women’s category, another Nigerian, Blessing Shambaz, raced to victory in 35 minutes and 58 seconds to also claim the $1,000 fee.
