Raphael Varane to continue working at Como in different role despite retirement

Raphael Varane: Ex-Real Madrid & Man Utd defender retires from professional football

Raphael Varane has announced he will remain at Italian club Como albeit in a different role following his retirement from professional football on Wednesday.

The former Real Madrid, Manchester United and RC Lens centre-back announced his retirement on Wednesday morning with an official statement on his Instagram page.

Serie A club Como shared Varane’s retirement post on Instagram, and the defender replied saying, “A different role for me than planned, but I can’t wait to start building together now. See you in Como soon.”

The Italian club then replied: “Part of the Como family, see you soon.”

Varane joined Como as a free agent in July after the expiration of his contract with the Red Devils, but suffered a knee injury on his debut which has led to him calling it quits with professional football.

It is, however, not yet certain the role the 31-year-old will play in the Italian side.

Como, coached by former Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, and are owned by the Hartono Family, Indonesia’s wealthiest family.

They returned to the Italian top flight after a 21-year absence and secured their first win of the season following a 3-2 away victory against Atalanta on Tuesday night.
