Lukaku, Toney & other Premier League players that could move before August transfer deadline

The Premier League summer transfer window has been filled with a lot of activity as regards player acquisitions and departures.

The upcoming 2024-25 Premier League season is expected to be more competitive, leading teams to strengthening in different departments.

This will lead to some players being surplus to requirements and Afrosport takes a look five of the most notable names that could move on from their existing Premier League clubs before the transfer windows shuts on August 30.

Romelu Lukaku (Chelsea)

The big Belgian’s second stint at Chelsea has been less than ideal since he joined in 2021 from Inter Milan. Since then, he has had loan spells back at Inter and AS Roma.

This is a clear indication that Lukaku’s services at Stamford Bridge under new boss Enzo Maresca are not required. He has been heavily linked with a move to Napoli where he will reunite with Antinio Conte who he enjoyed Serie A success with at Inter Milan.

The move will however be dependent on Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen and his depature from the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Michail Antonio (West Ham United)

The Jamaica forward has been a key figure for the Hammers over the years but his time at the club in recent seasons has been blighted by consistent injuries.

Antonio’s place in the West Ham squad might be under jeopardy after the signing of Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund.

This might prompt a move away from the London Stadium, with GiveMeSport reporting that Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in appending his signature.

Ivan Toney (Brentford)

The prolific England forward made headlines in May last year when he received an eight-month ban for breaching the FA’s betting regulations.

Despite the ban, Toney’s stock did not fall, with clubs reportedly interested in signing him even while he was suspended.

He came back in January this year and scored four goals in 17 games as Brentford avoided relegation and was able to make the England squad for the Euro 2024 where the Three Lions finished as runners-up.

Toney has been linked with Premier League clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League. A move might therefore materialise before the transfer window closes.

Joe Gomez (Liverpool)

Gomez was seen as one of the bright English prospects when he was signed by Liverpool from Charlton Athletic at the age of 19 in 2015.

His career has however been blighted by consistent injuries which have prevented him from making the kind of performances that were expected of him.

The 27-year-old signed a five-year contract extension with Liverpool in 2022, and since he has not been able to nail his place in Liverpool starting XI, the Merseyside outfit might decide to cash out on him in a bid to have a formidable squad under new manager Arne Slot.

Richarlison (Tottenham Hotspur)

There were hefty expectations on Richarlison’s shoulders when he was signed for £60 million from Everton in the summer of 2022.

Injuries and mental health issues however blighted his form, scoring just once in his debut season before improving with 11 Premier League goals last term after coming back from rehabilitation.

Richarlison’s improved form might not be a guarantee of his place in Ange Postecoglou’s squad as Spurs have acquired Dominic Solanke, who finished as the fourth highest goal scorer last season, from Bournemouth.

Richarlison has also been constantly linked with a move to the lucrative Saudi Pro League.
