Nguemo: Cameroon legend dies in ghastly road accident

Former Cameroon and French Ligue 1 star Landry Nguemo has been confirmed dead in a horrific road accident that happened around Cameroon’s capital city, Yaounde on Thursday.

Nguemo was reported to be in his car with his driver when a truck transporting sand collided with their vehicle along the Yaounde-Bafoussam axis of Ngomo locality.

The 38-year-old last played for Norwegian club Kongsvinger in 2019 and he featured for Cameroon at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups in South Africa and Brazil respectively.

Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) confirmed the tragic news with a condolence message to Nguemo’s family on social media.

“FECAFOOT just learned the news of the death of former Indomitable Lion, Landry Nguemo following a traffic accident,” the statement read.

“The former player of Girondins de Bordeaux marked his move to the Cameroonian team between 2006 and 2014.

“The FECAFOOT sends its condolences to his relatives and the entire football family.”

Nguemo spent the majority of his career in the French Ligue 1 with Nancy, Saint-Etienne and Bordeaux, winning the French Cup with the latter in 2012-13 season.

He also had a stint in Scotland with Celtic before later playing for Akhisarspor and Kayserispor in the Turkish Super Lig.

Nguemo made a total of 48 appearances for Cameroon national team and he was part of the Indomitable Lions selection that came second at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.
