The five-member committee set by the Ghana Football Association to look for a new head coach for the Black Stars has set a deadline of Friday, February 2 for submission of applications.
Ghana parted ways with Chris Hughton after the country’s abysmal outing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where they failed to make it out of the group stage after finishing third in Group B with two points from three games.
The search for the new Ghana national team coach is headed by the Ghanaian FA vice-president, Mark Addo who also has the mandate to approach competent coaches who did not apply for the vacant position.
One of the criteria for application is for the candidate to have at least 15 years of football experience and to be a proven winner in coaching top men’s national teams or club football.
In the last two years, Ghana has been led by three different coaches with Milovan Rajevac quitting first after the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon and Otto Addo succeeding him on an interim basis, leading the Black Stars to the 2022 FIFA World Cup but he quit immediately after the country’s elimination in Qatar.
Hughton was the most recent name in the Black Stars’ dug-out, taking charge in February 2023 but he was kicked out after the exit in Ivory Coast.
Kwesi Appiah (2017-2020) and Avram Grant (2014-2017) were the last coaches to spend at least three years at the helm of the Ghana national team since Fred Osam-Duodu from 1978 to 1981.
