AFCON 2023: Nigeria’s Boniface to undergo surgery, sidelined for months

Bayer Leverkusen have announced that Victor Boniface will undergo surgery for a muscle tendon injury and will be sidelined until April.

The Nigerian forward picked the injury while on training duty with the Super Eagles in Dubai ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations which he will play no part of.

OGC Nice forward Terem Moffi has since been called up as his replacement.

“Victor Boniface suffered a muscle-tendon injury in the right adductor area during the Nigerian training camp in Dubai,” Leverkusen said in a statement on X.

“The striker will undergo surgery in the coming days and is expected to be out of action until early April.

“We wish you a speedy recovery.”

Boniface’s absence will be a big blow for not only Nigeria’s quest to win a fourth AFCON title but also Leverkusen’s quest for a first-ever Bundesliga title.

The Pharmaceutical-backed club are currently top of the Bundesliga, four points clear of reigning champions Bayern Munich.

Boniface is the club’s top scorer with 10 goals in 16 Bundesliga games. He also has another combined six goals in the German Cup and Europa League.
