AFCON 2023: CAF releases provisional 40-man Super Eagles squad list

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released the provisional 41-man Super Eagles squad list ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria will be gunning for a fourth AFCON title as they battle hosts Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau in Group A.

The squad list is spear-headed in attack by Victor Osimhen who will be looking to be fully involved in the tournament after missing the 2021 edition due a broken cheekbone.

Veteran captain Ahmed Musa also makes the list and could potentially make his fourth AFCON outing having been involved in the title-winning side of 2013 as well as the 2019 and 2021 editions.

There will be potential tournament debuts for other attackers such Victor Boniface, Cyriel Dessers, Ademola Lookman, Terem Moffi and Nathan Tella.

Regular names on the list includes Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Job Aribo, Frank Onyeka, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Kenneth Omeruo, Semi Ajayi, Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey, Zaidu Sanusi, Bruno Onyemaechi, Bright Osayi-Samuel as well as goalkeepers Francis Uzoho and Adebayo Adeleke.

There is a return for the familiar faces of William Troost-Ekong, Umar Sadiq, Chidozie Awaziem, Tryonne Ebuehi, Kevin Akpoguma, Emmanuel Dennis, Paul Onuachu, Raphael Onyedika and Kelechi Nwakali.

Freshest members on the list include Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Jordan Torunarigha, Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi while the Nigeria Premier Football League-based players are Olorunleke Ojo of Enyimba, Christain Nwoke of Sporting Lagos and Obasogie Amas Obasogie Amas of Bendel Insurance while Stanley Nwabali plies his trade for Chippa United in South Africa.

Super Eagles boss Jose Peseiro has until January 3rd to submit his final squad list which will be trimmed down to 23 players.

The 2023 AFCON begins on January 13th when Ivory Coast take on Guinea-Bissau while Nigeria will open their campaign against Equatorial Guinea the following day.
