Premier League: Adingra scores as 10-man Brighton draw with Sheffield United

Ivorian winger Simon Adingra made it two goals in two games in all competitions for Brighton and Hove Albion with his first-half strike in their 1-1 stalemate against Sheffield United at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.

The 21-year-old, who scored their second goal in the Europa League on Thursday night, opened the scoring for the hosts with a fine finish from inside the box in the sixth minute. After his solo run from almost the halfway line, Adingra cuts inside from the left and then plays a neat one-two with Argentine winger Facundo Buonanotte before slotting the ball past Wes Foderingham in goal for the Blades.

The Seagulls were close to doubling their lead shortly after through Barcelona loanee Ansu Fati, who was played in by Buonanotte once again, but his shot was blocked by a brilliant reflex save from Foderingham.

Brighton were all over Sheffield in the first half, and Foderingham was called into action later in the half. After denying the home side’s goalbound freekick, the English goalie was forced into making a double save by tipping Billy Gilmour’s rebound from about 30 yards over the crossbar.

Roberto de Zerbi’s side continued to look dangerous in the second half, and Japanese winger Kaoru Mitoma almost doubled their lead, but for Foderingham, who once again was on hand to deny the attempt.

Brighton were reduced to ten men after Mahmoud Dahoud was shown a red card for a dangerous foul on Ben Osborn in the 69th minute.

The sending off changed the tide of the game as Sheffield looked to build on the one-man advantage. It finally paid off five minutes later as Adam Webster turned the ball into his own net for an own goal from a brilliant team move from the away side.

Jayden Bogle received the ball inside the box on the right, and the English full back sent a sweeping low cross across the six-yard box into a dangerous area, forcing Webster to turn it into his own goal while trying to clear the attempt.

The Blades almost completed the turnaround in the 78th minute after Cameron Archer played the ball into Bogle with a clever flick, but the latter lacked composure as he dragged his shot wide off the post.

Brighton held on for a draw, and it increased their winless run in the Premier League to six games—three draws and three losses. The result also ensured that Sheffield maintained their dominance in this fixture, having never lost to the Seagulls in the English top-flight, boasting two wins and three draws.

Bogle’s goal takes the Blades off the bottom of the Premier League table and into 19th with five points from 12 games, while Brighton remain eighth with 19 points.

The two teams will be back in action on November 25 after the international break, with Brighton travelling to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest and Sheffield hosting Bournemouth at Bramall Lane.
