2023 CAF Super Cup: Saudi Arabia to host Al Ahly vs USM Alger clash

The Confederation of African Football have selected the Saudi Arabian city of Taif as the host city for the 2023 CAF Super Cup on September 15.

CAF Champions League winners Al Ahly of Egypt will square off against CAF Confederation Cup winners USM Alger of Algeria at the King Fahd Stadium.

Earlier this year, CAF and Saudi Arabia Football Federation signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding to nurture growth of football opportunities for both parties and also host competitions.

USM Alger defeated Tanzania’s Young Africans by away goals after playing out a 2-2 draw in a two-legged Confederation Cup final.

The success secured USM Alger’s first continental title and they will face Africa’s most successful club in CAF competitions, Al Ahly who are gunning for their ninth CAF Super Cup.

The Red Devils defeated Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca 3-2 in the two-legged Champions League final in June.

CAF General Secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba, said: “We are excited to take the TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup to a new territory in Saudi Arabia – a country that has been making significant strides in global football.

“African football ranks amongst the best in the world right now, and it’s fitting that, in an era where many international stars are heading to Saudi Arabia, African Football is also a part of this movement.

“On behalf of CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, I would like to thank the Saudi Arabia Football family for their cooperation and we look forward to what will be an exciting TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup.”
