Cincinnati Open: Coco Gauff defeats Muchova to win maiden WTA 1000 title

Coco Gauff defeated Karolina Muchova in straights sets 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the Cincinnati Open to claim her first-ever WTA 1000 title.

The American teenage sensation and seventh seed recorded arguably the biggest win of her career when she stunned world number one Iga Swiatek in three sets in the semi-finals, her first win over the Pole in seven attempts.

Gauff started brightly against Muchova, taking a 2-0 lead in the first set. She was however broken in the third game but hit back in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead.

Muchova hit back immediately but Gauff did likewise for a 5-3 lead and did not drop a point in the ninth game as she held serve to win the set in 44 minutes.

The second set was more intense with both players holding serve until the fifth game when Gauff broke Muchova with her second break point. The American did it again in the seventh game for a 5-2 lead and though she could not see out the match on her serve in the eight game, she did so in the 10th game, wrapping up the match in 1 hour, 13 minutes.

The Cincinnati Open is Gauff’s fifth career title and third of 2023 after winning the Auckland Classic in January and the Washington Open earlier in August.
