Women’s World Cup: Morocco coach Pedros tags Germany bashing as ‘David vs Goliath’

Morocco coach Reynald Pedros has described their heavy 6-0 defeat to Germany at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 as a game between David and Goliath.

The Atlas Lionesses were making their debut in the competition while Germany are one of the most successful teams in international women’s football, having won the Women’s World Cup twice in 2003 and 2007.

At Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on Monday, Alexandra Popp’s double followed by goals from Klara Buhl, Lea Schuller and own goals from Morocco’s Hanne Ait El Haj and Yasmin Mrabet

“As it stands we came across a team today that was superior to our own. David and Goliath. They had something today that we didn’t,” Pedros said after the defeat.

“Unfortunately we made mistakes that are unpardonable. We came across a better team so maybe it went without saying that we were probably going to lose however we didn’t need to concede six goals.”

Morocco’s next Group H hurdle is against South Korea on July 30 and Pedros has assured that his team will bounce back and work to amend their mistakes in Monday’s defeat.

“I feel that we need to stay focused, we need to maintain our concentration on the games in hand,” two-time UEFA Women’s Champions League coach added. “We still have two games to play.

“Our objective is obviously to as quickly as possible get back to work, get our heads down. Obviously we also want to look at maybe what was missing today on the pitch. What we weren’t quite able to do but we’re going to get ready for our game against Korea.”
