Dutch foward Promes convicted of stabbing cousin

Dutch forward Quincy Promes has been found guilty of stabbing his cousin in the leg (knee) and was subsequently sentenced to 18 months in prison on Monday.

The 31-year-old Netherland international was guilty of stabbing his cousin during a family party in July 2020.

The Amsterdam District Court judges explained that the sentence for the offense would usually be a year, but Promes was handed a longer punishment because “the suspect is a professional football player and Dutch celebrity and therefore sets an example to others.”

Dutch police got a hold of the incident as a result of a wiretap on the football star’s phone as part of an ongoing investigation into drug smuggling, where he was alleged to have attempted to import over 1.3 metric tons of cocaine through Antwerp port back in January 2020.

Promes, who currently plays for Russian side Spartak Moscow, was plying his trade back home in the Netherlands with Ajax at the time of the incident.

The forward, who has seven goals in 50 games for the Netherlands, is still expected to face charges for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking, with the court date set for August 11.
