WAFU U20 Women’s Cup: Falconets whitewash Togo 6-0

Amina Bello and Flourish Sabastine scored two goals each as the Nigeria Under-20 women’s team, the Falconets, thrashed Togo 6-0 in their second group game at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Wednesday.

The Falconets headed into the tie with their confidence high after a 7-0 win over the Niger Republic in their first game of the 2023 WAFU U-20 Women`s Championship. They started the tie against their West African neighbors in the same fashion, with Bello putting them ahead in the 11th minute.

Bayelsa Queens forward Sabastine got her first of the night just a minute later before FC Robo Queen’s Esther Onyenezide added a third for Nigeria on the half-hour mark.

The second half did not disappoint as Bello, who was part of the Under-17 team that won bronze at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in India last year, completed her brace just before the hour mark.

Another Robo Queen’s star, Opeyemi Ajakaye, got the Falconets’ fifth of the match in the 61st minute before Sabastine added her second and Nigeria’s sixth to complete the rout.

The victory in Kumasi takes the Chris Danjuma-led side to the semifinals of the tournament with a game to spare. They currently sit atop Group B with six points from two games, scoring 13 goals and conceding none.

Nigeria will take on Burkina Faso in their final group game at the Paa Joe Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday, May 28, at 5 p.m. WAT.
