Tunisia Volleyball: The puissant Carthage Eagles soaring beyond Africa

Tunisia’s men national volleyball team, the Carthage Eagles are one of the best volleyball teams in Africa

The nine-time African champions have a near-impeccable record on the continent, having won at least a medal in every championship they participated in since 1967, except in 2009.

Tunisia are currently rated 15th in the International Federation of Volleyball rankings and they are the top-ranked volleyball nation in Africa and the Arab world.

They have also made seven appearances at the Olympics. Tunisia’s men volleyball team are coached by 76-year-old Antonio Giacobbe, an experienced Italian who has 60 victories in six volleyball seasons.

He coached the Italian women’s volleyball team from 1980 to 1985 before taking up the mantle to guide the Tunisian volleyball team in 1999.

Giacobbe led the selection until 2007 and went on to coach the Egyptian volleyball team before returning as Tunisia coach again in 2017.

Tunisia have a total of 31 gold, 14 Silver and 5 Bronze medals in all championships they have featured in. Their first major medal was the bronze medal they earned at the Pan Arab Games in Beirut in 1957.

The Carthage Eagles defeated Cameroon 3-1 to claim the men’s African Volleyball Championship crown at the Kigali Arena in Rwanda on September 15, 2021.
