Lyon’s Matic handed two-match Ligue 1 ban for covering anti-homophobia badge

Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic has been given a two-match ban with a further two matches suspended after concealing an anti-homophobia badge on his shirt during a Ligue 1 match, Afrosport reports.

The 36-year-old used tape to cover the anti-homophobia message on his jersey following his substitute appearance in Lyon’s 2-0 win over Angers on 17 May, the final day of the 2024-25 Ligue 1 season.

Ligue 1 players are asked to wear rainbow-coloured symbols as part of an anti-homophobia campaign in the league.

Matic, whose contract at Lyon is set to expire at the end of June, is yet to agree on new terms with the club.

Meanwhile, Le Havre’s Egyptian forward Ahmed Hassan was also served the same punishment for covering the same message with tape during their 3-2 win at Strasbourg.

Lyon finished sixth in Ligue 1 and qualified for the Europa League, while Le Havre just avoided relegation following a 15th-place finish.
