Awoniyi scores as Nottingham Forest progress in Carabao Cup

Taiwo Awoniyi was among the goalscorers in Nottingham Forest’s 4-1 win over Blackburn Rovers in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Brenan Johnson got things off in the 13th minute of play by converting from the penalty spot. Blackburn equalised two minutes to half time courtesy of Scott Wharton.

Former Manchester United player Jesse Lingard restored Forest’s lead eight minutes after the break and would turn provider for Awoniyi who registered his name on the scoresheet in the 79th minute.

Steve Cooper’s still had time for one more goal and it came via Johnson in the second minute of added time to complete his brace.

Awoniyi – who joined from German Bundesliga side Union Berlin in the summer – was taken off after 82 minutes and replaced by fellow Nigeria international Emmanuel Dennis.

Awoniyi’s strike was his fourth of the season and first in the EFL Cup. He has recorded three goals in the Premier League against West Ham, Fulham and his former employers Liverpool.

The 25-year-old will be looking to get into the goalscoring act again when Forest resume league duties with a trip to Manchester United on December 27.
