2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Osimhen withdraws from Nigeria squad

AFCON 2023: Super Eagles hold Equatorial Guinea to draw in Group A opener

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has been replaced in Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin in June.

Osimhen has been replaced by high-flying Enugu Rangers left-back, Kenneth Igboke due to an injury that will rule him out of action for four weeks.

Osimhen came off the bench to play in Napoli’s goalless draw against Lecce on Sunday as his club ended their Serie A campaign in the 10th position.

Igboke has been a vital player for Enugu Rangers in the Nigeria Premier Football League this season as his defensive contributions and return of two goals with an assist have helped Fidelis Illechukwu’s side stay at the top of the table.

The 23-year-old defender joins Enyimba goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke and Remo Stars right-back Sodiq Ismail as the third player from the Nigeria top-flight in the 23-man list.

Nigeria are aiming to claim their first win in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium after playing goalless draws against Zimbabwe and Lesotho in November 2023.

The Super Eagles will welcome South Africa to Uyo on June 7 before travelling to Abidjan to face Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic on June 11.

Finidi George is expected to open Nigeria’s camp for the crucial games on Saturday, June 1.

Afrosport will be showing LIVE the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers between Nigeria and South Africa on June 7 and the game between Nigeria and Benin Republic on June 11.
