Super Eagles defender Felix Agu faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury during Werder Bremen’s clash with St. Pauli on Saturday, Afrosport reports.
The 26-year-old was forced off just before half-time in the Bundesliga fixture, only a day after being named in Nigeria’s 23-man squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin.
Agu, who was replaced by Isaac Schmidt, has been diagnosed with a syndesmosis ligament injury and is expected to be out for several months, ruling him out of both qualifiers.
This was confirmed by Bremen on Monday after an MRI and X-ray examination conducted by team doctor Robert Gorzolla. The Bundesliga club added: “The various treatment options are currently being reviewed, and a decision will be made soon.”
Agu’s withdrawal provides more selection problems for head coach Eric Chelle after Zaidu Sanusi and Christantus Uche replaced the injured pair of Bright Osayi-Samuel and Cyriel Dessers.
With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations just over two months away, the defender is now a major doubt for the tournament — a huge setback for the left-back, who was hoping to make his mark for Nigeria.
The Super Eagles will face Lesotho at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa on Friday, 10 October before hosting Benin in Uyo four days later.
