2025 CAF Awards: Osimhen in contention as Player of the Year nominees unveiled

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has been shortlisted for the CAF Men’s Player of the Year award after another outstanding season for both club and country, Afrosport reports.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Wednesday announced the nominees in the male category for the 2025 CAF Awards, set to take place in Marrakech, Morocco, for the third year in a row.

Osimhen’s nomination comes after an incredible season on loan at Galatasaray, where he fired the Turkish giants to a domestic double, winning both the Super Lig and Turkish Cup. The Nigerian striker netted 37 goals and provided eight assists across all competitions, for Galatasaray, cementing his status as one of the most lethal strikers in world football.

The 26-year-old has continued to lead from the front on the international stage, playing a key role in the Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. He recently scored a hat-trick in the 4–0 win over Benin Republic, helping Nigeria secure a spot in the play-offs and firmly keeping the three-time African champions in contention.

Osimhen, who won the 2023 edition, faces stiff competition for the continent’s top individual honour, including Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who guided the Reds to the Premier League title and claimed both the Golden Boot and Player of the Season awards.

Also in the running is Achraf Hakimi, who enjoyed a treble-winning season with Paris Saint-Germain, adding the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1, and French Cup to his collection.

Other nominees include Frank Anguissa (Cameroon), Fiston Mayele (DR Congo), Denis Bouanga (Gabon), Serhou Guirassy (Guinea), Oussama Lamlouhi (Morocco), Iliman Ndiaye (Senegal), and Pape Matar Sarr (Senegal).

The 2025 CAF Awards Gala will take place in Marrakech, with the date yet to be announced.
