2025 CAF Awards: Nwabali up for Goalkeeper of the Year honours

NFF mourns with Nwabali over mother’s demise

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has been nominated for the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year award after a standout year for both Nigeria and Chippa United, Afrosport reports.

Since breaking out at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the 29-year-old has become one of Africaโ€™s most reliable goalkeepers. He played a crucial role in the Unity Cup triumph in London and was solid in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, keeping a clean sheet in the 4โ€“0 win over Benin Republic in Uyo earlier this month.

Nwabali faces tough competition for the continental honour, with Andre Onana (Cameroon), Yassine Bounou (Morocco), Edouard Mendy (Senegal), and Ronwen Williams (South Africa) among the nominees.

Others include Ahmed El Shenawy (Egypt), Munir Mohamedi (Morocco), Aymen Dahmen (Tunisia), Vozinha (Cape Verde), and Marc Diouf (Senegal).

Meanwhile, Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi has been nominated for the CAF Young Player of the Year award. Bameyiโ€™s leadership and consistency earned widespread praise as he captained Nigeria to U-20 AFCON bronze, featured at the U-20 World Cup, and impressed throughout the WAFU B U-20 Championship.

The 19-year-old centre-back will battle a host of rising stars from across the continent, such as Asharaf Tapsoba (Burkina Faso), Alynho Haidara (Ivory Coast), Noah Sadiki (DR Congo), Moroccoโ€™s trio of Abdellah Ouazane, Houssam Essadak, and Othmane Maamma, Momoh Kamara (Sierra Leone), and South African pair Mbekezile Mboikazi and Tylon Smith.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released the shortlist on Wednesday ahead of the 2025 CAF Awards ceremony, which will take place in Marrakech, Morocco, for the third year running. The date and venue has yet to be announced.
