Brazil superstar Neymar has backed his compatriot Vinicius Junior to win the 2024 Ballon d’Or, Afrosport reports.
Vinicius had a stellar 2023-24 season, having a hand a in 35 goal involvements (24 goals, 11 assists) in 39 competitive appearances as Real Madrid won a record-extending 15th UEFA Champions League title and 36th La Liga title.
The 24-year-old has continued that rich vein of form this season with 11 goal involvements (four goals, seven assists) in 12 competitive outings and Neymar is of the opinion that no other player deserves it better.
“We have a wonderful relationship. I love Vini. Vini is beyond, and he is a great friend to whom I was introduced by football,” the former Barcelona player said.
“And he had a great season. He certainly played a lot. I’ll certainly be rooting for him to win the Ballon d’Or.
“I don’t think there’s anyone else but him to win it. We hope that it comes back to Brazil soon and that it’s now with Vine, a guy who deserves it because he’s a hard worker and has suffered a lot throughout his life, but he’s surpassed all expectations and all the criticism they’ve levelled at him.
“Today, he has become a great idol and a great hero for us. So I am very happy, very happy that he’s carrying this Brazilian flag around the world.”
Vinicius will be up against the likes of Real Madrid teammate Jude Bellingham, Barcelona teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
