Senegal began their quest for the men’s football gold medal at the 2023 African Games with a 1-0 win over South Sudan in Thursday’s group B clash.
The Young Teranga Lions are aiming to win gold for the second time having claimed it when they defeated Burkina Faso in the 2015 final.
The Senegalese are the reigning U-20 Africa Cup of Nations champions and made their presence known against the South Sudanese, who were making their first appearance in the football event at the African Games, with Lamine Sadio’s strike in the 16th minute.
The victory gives Saliou Dia’s side early advantage in Group B with their next game against Uganda, who face 1973 gold medalists Nigeria, in Thursday’s other Group B clash.
