Worry for Senegal as Mane suffers injury ahead of World Cup

Senegal have been dealt a blow ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after their star forward Sadio Mane suffered an ankle injury in Bayern Munich’s 6-1 thrashing of Werder Bremen.

Mane was in action for 20 minutes at the Allianz Arena before limping off the pitch.

The 2022 African Footballer of the Year was subsequently replaced by Leroy Sane and his condition comes as a worry for Senegal coach Aliou Cisse before the announcement of his squad this week.

Mane has established himself in Munich since he joined Julen Nagelsmann’s side from Liverpool in June, scoring six goals in 14 Bundesliga matches so far.

The 30-year-old is a talismanic figure in the Teranga Lions’ set-up and he played a vital role in helping them win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon earlier this year.

Since he made his international debut for Senegal in 2015, the former Liverpool and Southampton star has registered 34 goals in 93 matches for the West African country.

Mane could miss Bayern Munich’s final Bundesliga match before the World Cup, with a trip to Schalke 04 scheduled for Saturday.

Bayern Munich sit atop the German top-flight standings with 31 points after 14 games.
