World Athletics Championships: Burkina Faso’s Zango wins gold in triple jump, Richardson wins women’s 100 metres

Hugues Fabrice Zango was the toast of the African continent on Monday evening as he claimed the gold medal in the final of the men’s triple jump event at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Budapest while Sha’Carri Richardson was victorious in the final of the women’s 100 metres.

Burkina Faso’s Zango was a bronze medalist at the 2019 World Championships in Doha and went on to take silver at the 2022 event in Eugene, Oregon. Gold was there for the taking in Budapest which he claimed by finishing with a jump of 17.64 metres ahead of the Cuban duo of Lazaro Martinez and Cristian Napoles.

In the highly-anticipated women’s 100 metres final, 23-year-old Richardson made a late charge to finish in with a championship record of 10.65 secs ahead of the Jamaican duo of Shericka Jackson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. It was her first medal at the World Championships and brought to an end Fraser-Pryce’s dominance in the women’s 100 metres that stretches back to the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

Africa’s fastest woman, Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josee Ta Lou came fourth in a time of 10.81 seconds ahead of fast-rising Saint Lucian Julien Alfred while Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith finished eighth in a time of 11.00 secs.

In the men’s 110 metres hurdles, America’s Grant Holloway won his third consecutive championship gold medal, finishing with a season best of 12.96 seconds ahead of Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment and compatriot Daniel Roberts.

Sweden’s Daniel Stahl won gold in the men’s discus throw while Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh took silver and Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna claimed the bronze medal.

In the women’s 400 metres, South Africa’s Zeney van der Walt made it into the final likewise Jamaica’s Candice McLeod, Belgium’s Cynthia Bolingo, Ireland’s Rhasidat Adeleke of Nigerian descent and Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino.

In the men’s 400 metres hurdles, Nigeria’s Ezekiel Nathaniel pulled through to the final. He was joined by Qatar’s Bassem Hemeida, Jamaica’s Jaheel Hyde, America’s CJ Allen and Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands.
