World record holder Tobi Amusan failed to defend her world title at the 2023 World Athletics Championships after finishing sixth in the women’s 100m hurdles final late on Thursday.
Amusan failed to secure a podium finish as she could only settle for sixth place, clocking 12.62 seconds, as Jamaican sprinter Danielle Williams shocked the whole athletics world to claim the gold medal in the much-anticipated women’s 100-metre hurdles event in Budapest, Hungary.
Williams, who also won the event in 2015 in Beijing, China, clocked the fastest time, finishing with a season’s best time of 12.43 seconds ahead of reigning Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (12.44 seconds) and former world record holder Kendra Harrison of the United States, who came third in 12.46 seconds.
Bahamian sprinter Devynne Charlton finished fourth in 12.52 seconds; another Jamaican sprinter, Ackera Nugent ended fifth in 12.61, while Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji (12.70secs) and United States Nia Ali (12.78secs), who is the 2019 world champion, both finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively.
This marks the second time in three meetings that Amusan will miss out on a podium finish in the finals of the women’s 100m hurldes in the World Athletics Championships.
