Women’s World Cup: Zambia return home after group stage exit

Women’s World Cup: Zambia shock Germany in five-goal friendly match

Zambia players and technical crew are back in Lusaka after the country’s maiden appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and Australia.

The Copper Queens returned home after beating Costa Rica 3-1 on Monday, for their first win in the tournament and they finished third in Group C, below Japan and Spain.

They arrived in the country’s capital city aboard Ethiopian Airlines earlier on Thursday and they were welcomed by officials of the Sports Ministry and the Football Association of Zambia.

Bruce Mwape’s ladies suffered 5-0 defeats to Japan and Spain in their first two matches but they managed to leave the Oceania continent on a high with goals from Lushomo Mweemba, Barbra Banda and Rachael Kundananji powering them to victory.

Mweemba’s volley in under three minutes is the fastest goal scored at this year’s Women’s World Cup while Barbra’s 31st-minute is the 1000th goal scored in the competition’s history.

Zambia won bronze at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and they will be hoping to qualify for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027.
