Nigeria coach Randy Waldrum has warned his players to make the most of their chances in the game against Australia at the FIFA Women’s World Cup on Thursday morning.
The Super Falcons only managed a single shot on target in their goalless draw against Canada last Friday and they need a win against the Matildas to boost their chances of progressing in the competition.
Waldrum admitted Group B has been difficult and won’t produce five goals in a match, but he urged his players to make their chances count by being clinical at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
The American coach expressed confidence in the quality of attackers in the Super Falcons squad that can hurt the co-host country.
“It’s all about getting results at this point, and getting points out of it,” Waldrum said. “I maybe would worry more if we weren’t creating opportunities at all, but we have been.
“Looking at the group, it’s a very very difficult group so you’re not going to be putting in four or five goals a game in this kind of group. So I”m not worried about that.
“We have quality in the team and we have players that can score goals and we just have to make sure, when those opportunities come, that we’re clinical with those opportunities.”
The Nigeria coach continued that they are unperturbed by the absence of injured Australia star Sam Kerr and they are still cautious of the threats Australia might pose in Thursday’s morning match.
The 66-year-old said: “Well look we never like to see players injured and I know how devastating that is, missing matches at World Cups. But I don’t think it really changes our tactics and what we’re trying to do.
“They obviously still have a lot of weapons that can hurt you. I know for them it’s, they might feel it’s somewhat of a challenge, but for us we know the strength of their team.”
