Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum said they are working to balance their attacking and defensive for their second game against Australia at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
The 11-time African champions are aiming to bag maximum points against the co-host country when they face each other in Brisbane on Thursday morning.
Australia lead Group B with three points after their 1-0 win against the Republic of Ireland, and Waldrum is cautious of the Maltidas’ approach for Thursday’s game.
Waldrum told the NFF TV: “We have to be smart about Australia, they are very good on the counter-attack and they have great team speed especially in the wide areas, so one thing they are willing to do is to let you attack so they have space to counter-attack you.
“We have to find that balance of attacking more and trying to more opportunities but being smart about we go about doing that because we don’t want to leave ourselves open too much defensively.
“They are so dangerous so you don’t go forward so quickly. These are the few things we are working on to get ready for them.”
The American coach also hinted that there could be some changes in his attacking line-up as Nigeria chase their first win in the tournament.
The Super Falcons only managed just a shot on target during their goalless draw against Canada on Friday.
“We have a lot of attacking options in our team, I think you will probably see a little bit different line-up in the frontline going into Australia,” he added.
“We have a lot of options and a lot of weapons, so we need to find out who is going to be that player that will be hungry to get that goal for us.”
Atletico Madrid star Rasheedat Ajibade will be available for selection against Australia after completing her two-game suspension from the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
